Shenzhen Early Childhood Education & Technology

Philanthropy Leaders began its work in 2017-18 with a pilot project which brings cutting edge technology and high quality teacher training to improve pre-school and kindergarten education for disadvantaged children in the Chinese provinces of Hebei, Henan, Liaoning and Shanxi.  Our implementing partner is the Shenzhen Charity Federation.  We are grateful to a visionary grant from a family foundation in New York which makes this work possible.

The program combines teacher and parent training and engagement with digital learning programs and software, targeted to improving the learning of pre-school and kindergarten children in both rural and urban communities.  To lay the foundation for replication in other parts of China and sustained funding, the project is being carried out in partnership with local government bureaus. Our goal: to demonstrate successful modes of digital innovations in early childhood education.

Outcomes:

1. About 100 kindergartens and pre-school education centers have improved access to teacher training and “wired” digital tools in their child development facilities.

2. Project sites will have a mechanism for collaboration among health, education and welfare sectors, as well as local government so as to explore possible digital innovations in improving the early childhood care and education in disadvantaged communities.

3. Our partners convened decision makers and planners from the Ministry of Education and other related ministries to share the results of the pilot and to explore project replication.
